Surely hamsters should star in nursery rhymes?
I bet you didn't know that 'Mary had a little lamb' was first published on May 24, 1830. I didn't even know it until I was scratching around for ideas about what to write. I'm steering clear of the news as a source of inspiration right now as it's a bit too upsetting. Manchester isn't too far away from Blackpool.
Birds and farm animals seem to have cornered the market in being stars of nursery rhymes. And I admit it, I'm jealous! I know rodents do make an appearance, but hamsters would be better representatives of the order Rodentia than mice.
I suppose hamsters don't make noises that can be easily copied by pre-school children. But that doesn't mean we should be overlooked.
I did find one rhyme on rhymezone.com but it's not exactly popular. I think I'm going to have to dedicate some of my snacking time to raising the profile of hamsters amongst young humans.
