Title: Preparing for new Blackpool church

1957 newspaper cutting about a ground-breaking ceremony at St John Vianney's Church

Over 1,000 Blackpool Catholics, yesterday, attended ceremony around a wooden cross marking the altar site for the new church of St. John Vianney, which is to be built at cost of £50,000. The Bishop of Sinda, Dr. T. B. Pearson, cut the first sod, watched by clergy from churches throughout Blackpool and by parishioners.

The site in Glastonbury-avenue, Marton, opposite the St. John Vianney school and temporary chapel, opened in 1934, was originally intended for municipal baths, but the Corporation decided on an alternative site.

The new church is to be completed by 1959 — the 25th anniversary of the founding of the parish.
