Title: Church opening
The new Catholic Church of St Cuthbert’s, Blackpool, was opened this week with elaborate ceremonial.
The church is a very fine building of Decorated Gothic design, built of brick-faced Yorkshire parpoints, relieved with Runcorn stone dressings. The designs of Mr. James O’Byrne, Liverpool, the architect, have been carried out by Messrs. W. Brown and sons, Manchester.
At the opening service on Sunday morning those officiating were Rev. F. Walstein, S.J., celebrant; Rev. F. Thomas, S.J., deacon; and Rev. F. Lupton, sub-deacon. The Bishop of Salford, preached a sermon on the duties of Roman Catholics, and among those present was Bishop O’Reilly, of Liverpool. There were crowded congregations, and full choral services both morning and evening. The preacher in the evening was Mgr. Bilsborrow, of St. Joseph’s College.
