Title: Cardinal Bourne's tour - tributes to the beauties of Lytham St. Annes - admiration for us 'delightful Town Hall'

1926 newspaper cutting about Cardinal Bourne's visit to the Fylde

Shortly before noon, to-day, his Eminence Cardinal Bourne motored from Blackpool to Lytham St. Annes, where he was received at the Town Hall by the Mayor (Alderman Lightwood), the Deputy Mayor (Alderman Hope), the Town Clerk (Mr. T. Bradley), aldermen and members of the Town Council, and prominent residents of the town.

The clergy present included Bishop Pearson, O.S.B., Lancaster; Provost O’Reilly, Lytham; Canon Lupton, Blackpool; and Fathers Ryan and Stott, St. Annes.

In the reception room, where his Eminence received those present, the Mayor said the town was proud to have a visit from one of the most famous men in the country.

Cardinal Bourne said he was very grateful for the opportunity given to him for enlarging his knowledge of the geography of England. He had seen some wonderful things in Blackpool, which was known all over the country favourably, but he had no idea previously of the beauties of Lytham St. Annes. He had been expressing his admiration and astonishment to his secretary.

VERY FINE BUILDINGS.

There were some very fine buildings in the town, and he could understand people coming to Lytham St. Annes for rest and recreation. He could also understand persons settling in the town. Very few places could form a more worthy or desirable place of residence. He must congratulate the town on its delightful and comfortable Town Hall, which was by no means so conventional as very many others he had been in elsewhere.

Bishop Pearson, who spoke of the friendly and regal way in which he was entertained when he came to St Annes, said he would have been very sorry indeed if his Eminence had not been able to visit the town.

After posing for photographers Cardinal Bourne left for Lancaster. From there he will return to London.
